Buzz Lightyear

When I was a kid my favorite toys were just plaster-cine. I was able to make any figure I wanted and make the battle without breaking anything. But, the toy i enjoyed the most was this Buzz Lightyear figure, it was the creme della creme of toys when it was first released. It was huge, lights up, talks, shoots lasers, and the wings, can never forget the retractable wings. In a design perspective this was a great toy, it was made out of a durable plastic that was nearly impossible for a kid to break. It had a wide range of movement and even just the size is enough to make a kid love it. It did put a dent in my parents pocket, but to this day Buzz Lightyear is somewhere hidden and still in mint
condition.

"At the International Living Future Institute, we believe that a compelling vision for the future is a fundamental requirement for reconciling humanity’s relationship with the natural world. Rather than advocating for incremental improvements to the built environment and the industries that interact with it, we define the desired outcome for the movement we serve: the cultivation of restorative ecosystems in which thriving communities benefit the biosphere as a whole."

Her talk went in depth of the whole sustainability craze that be going on in the market. Its good that we have programs like this where they are truly creating ways to improve industrial sustainability awareness.

Shake hands with yourself

With this exhibit it was designed without any moving parts and it was one of the two sections that incorporate light and mirrors to visually change perspectives.

Its created out of a wood and plastic mix, and glass for the mirror. Its intention is for the user to sit and look forward, it doesn't envole any rapid physical movement, therefore the exhibition would be easy to maintain.

It's designed for a quick interaction with the user, and its really in and out. The user will look forward and try to understand what is happening with the light and the mirror, while it looks like your hand is projecting towards you, so you are able to shake hands with yourself.

This exhibition worked extremely well because it can last nearly forever, and it can act as a resting place, where  you can just stop and absorb the information. It's isolated in a darker area where there isn't a lot of traffic flow, and it teaches kids about playing with perspective.

One of our apartments...

 - SUBURBAN

Guildford Surrey is currently a community for new home owners, and for young families. It is also the center that connects most of the other Surrey suburban areas such as Fraser Heights and Fleetwood. Theres more night activities in this area, and most people in Surrey would come out for food, drinks, and the infamous Mirage Night Club. Also Guildford Mall is going through expansion that should almost match the likes of Metrotown's Metropolis Shopping Center.

Tobias Wong had a strong sense of implementing design with functionality. He uses his insight in a conceptual form, taking selected items and interprets them with different ways of use. He has shown that he is able to conceptualize products that serves a certain purpose, but incorporates a deeper concept that might not be able to recognize from the first glance. Wong has mixed shock art along with product design to define himself as a bred that designs products with strong aesthetic traits with fully functional products. Some of his designs may not be designed for the greater good, but yet to expose certain flaws that certain items may have for society (gold plated stir stick, smoking mitts). He also has the ability to produce products that would benefit the consumer market (solar jar, mass produced wireless light switch). Wong's designs are practical for the better or for the worst.

 (Coke Spoons, 2005)

  - Tobias Wong used commonly accessible items that we interact with everyday, and created glorified coke snorting tools. The McDonald's coffee stir stick and BIC pen lid are used as an disposable item for snorting coke. In terms of design and functionality, the purpose of this project is quite sustainable. By adding value to these items makes it less disposable to cocaine users, and they would think twice before disposing the product, and keep it as their go to snorting tool. Is this design good for the society? In someways yes, and also no.

(Sun Jar, 2006)

  - Sun Jar is a sustainable product that is designed with a rechargeable battery that fuels LED lights that creates a soft light through the matted glass. This product Wong made displays his creativity ability for the greater good.

(Smoking Mitts,  2008)

  - Smoking mitt are one of the most practical designs for smokers in the winter. They are designed perfectly to fit a cigarette comfortably through the eyelet. It was a simple design that targeted a user group that isn't commonly designed for. Not sure if FINAL HOME approved of this collaboration, but I doubt that Kosuke Tsumura was outraged or even opposed to the modification to their product. I'm also unsure if this was even a FINAL HOME product or did Wong just stamp their logo on a regular pair of mitts, because of the design history of FINAL HOME.

-
In the end, Tobias Wong nitpicks on flaws in society/products and put his two cents through design. He was pretty much an artistic comedian.

The material I chose for this project is CD's. The purpose of this project is to design something out of a recyclable material, and they to create something  that is functional or just an alternative purpose.

Above is an example of something that inspired me for this project.
